Standing Together on Denim Day: A Commitment to Ending Sexual Violence

April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month! This is a time dedicated to raising awareness about sexual violence and advocating for prevention and education. At Mutual Ground, we recognize the importance of addressing this public health and safety issue that affects individuals of all genders.

History of Denim Day

Denim Day originated over twenty one years ago and was ignited by a troubling court decision made in Italy. The Italian Supreme Court overturned a rape conviction and sited the victim’s tight jeans as evidence of implied consent. In response to this, women in the Italian Parliament wore jeans to work the following day, sparking a global movement of solidarity. Denim Day was developed by Peace Over Violence, and has become the longest-running sexual violence prevention and education campaign in history, urging individuals to wear jeans in an effort to challenge the misconceptions surrounding sexual violence.

We stand in unwavering solidarity with the DOI (US Department of the Interior). Under Secretary Bernhardt’s leadership, the DOI is committed to transforming culture in the workplace as well as preventing harassing conduct. Denim Day serves as a poignant reminder that we have a collective responsibility to support survivors and to eliminate sexual violence in our community. Denim Day invites members of the community, businesses, students, and elected officials to make a statement by wearing jeans on April 24th. This serves as a form of protest against the misconceptions that contribute to perpetuating sexual violence.
